Off-Grid Living Festival
Chiltern, Victoria
A two-day, multi-stage festival in rural Victoria with 313 program items, 314 presenters, 18 venues, and limited mobile connectivity. The Moment app handled all of it — and replaced the printed program.
The festival
The Off-Grid Living Festival runs in Chiltern, Victoria — a town of around 1,500 people in the state's north-east. It brings together homesteaders, off-grid builders, sustainability practitioners, and renewable-energy specialists across a packed two-day program. In April 2025, the festival ran 313 events across 18 venues, with 314 named presenters covering everything from solar systems to butchering, gardening to small-scale farming.

Two practical problems came with running an event of that scale in a rural location:
- Printed programs didn't fit the festival's ethos. Off-Grid Living Festival is environmentally focused. Handing out hundreds of paper programs sat uncomfortably with the values the festival was promoting.
- The site has a low-connectivity rural location. Any digital solution had to work reliably with intermittent mobile coverage.
The 2025 festival was the festival's first time using an event app of any kind.
Why Moment
The festival team chose Moment for three reasons:
Custom branding throughout
The festival has a strong visual identity. Moment let the team set their own colours across the app, use their custom logo, upload a custom map image of the festival grounds, and create individual custom images for each of the eighteen stages. The app looked and felt like the festival, not like a generic third-party tool.
Custom menus for sponsor integration
Sponsors matter to the festival's financial sustainability. The team used Moment's custom side menus to create dedicated sponsor links — "Get a Solar System", "Australian Made Batteries", "Buy Butchering & Homesteading Equipment", "Buy All-Electric Outdoor Equipment" — turning the app itself into a sponsor activation channel rather than just an information directory.
Reliable performance with low connectivity
The Moment app is designed to work with intermittent connectivity. Patrons who lost signal in parts of the festival grounds still had access to the schedule, map, and venue information.
How patrons used it
Over the 21-day window around the festival, the Moment app for Off-Grid Living Festival saw:
- 2,101 unique users (devices)
- 8,058 total sessions
- 8,488 deep-link opens — patrons sharing or jumping straight to specific events, artists, and venues
- 418 share actions — patrons sharing event details with friends
- Peak day: 866 active users on Saturday 12 April 2025
Daily active users went from ~82/day in the lead-up to 671/day during the festival — an 8× lift driven by patrons actually using the app on-site. And — as a direct result — no printed programs were handed out. The app fully replaced them.
With such a huge festival program it was fabulous to work with the Moment team to develop our digital program and make this available for our festival attendees. Being able to see what was happening around the festival (who, what, when and where) at any moment, made it much easier for people to get the best out of their experience onsite. And as a bonus it allowed us to reduce waste with no printed programs.
